The Problem
The Bay Area has thousands of Below Market Rate housing units spread across its cities. But finding them is unreasonably hard. Each city maintains its own system — some post PDFs on municipal websites, others use spreadsheets, a few have no public-facing listing at all. There's no single place to search.
BMR units are embedded in luxury apartment complexes with pools, gyms, and modern finishes. But you'd never know that from the way they're listed. The information gap means eligible families miss deadlines, never learn about openings, or don't realize how good these opportunities actually are.
What We Built
Bay Area BMR aggregates every BMR listing across Bay Area cities into one searchable platform. We show you interior photos, amenities, market-rate comparisons, and application deadlines — the same quality of information you'd see on Zillow, for housing you can actually afford.
The site is free. The code is open source. The data comes from California Public Records Act (CPRA) requests submitted directly to each city's housing department on a bimonthly cycle.
Where the Data Comes From
We file formal CPRA requests with Bay Area city housing departments every two months. Cities are legally required to respond within 10 calendar days.
The data we receive includes property names, addresses, income limits, unit counts, bedroom configurations, and application deadlines. We supplement this with publicly available information from property management company websites, Zillow, Apartments.com, and Google Places to add photos, amenities, and market-rate pricing.
Every listing shows a "Last Verified" date so you know how current the information is.
